From the bench

The advice we'd give a friend who just walked in.

Short, useful, sometimes opinionated notes from the technicians. Written between jobs, edited in the lunch break. No filler, no fake-expert listicles.

Service intervalBrake fluid really does have a shelf life

DOT 4 absorbs water from the air through the master cylinder breather. After two years it can hold up to 3% water by weight, which lowers the boiling point enough to fade your pedal on a long mountain descent. Flush every 24 months — it costs less than a tank of fuel.

Tyre wearThe pattern tells you what's wrong with the car

Outer shoulder wear means under-inflation or hard cornering. Inner shoulder wear means alignment is out — usually toe-in too aggressive. A patch of feathering across the tread means a worn suspension bushing. Bring a photo, we'll diagnose remotely.

HybridYour 12V battery is the real boss

Most hybrid "won't start" complaints we see are 12V battery failures, not the traction pack. The 12V wakes up the system. If yours is more than four years old and the car has been parked for a week, expect trouble. Test it during your next service.

AirconRun the climate at the same setting every day

Bouncing between max cold and off shortens compressor life. Pick a comfortable temperature, let the auto fan do the work. Switch to fresh-air mode for the last five minutes of your drive to dry the evaporator and prevent the musty smell.

FuelTop up before the gauge hits empty, not after

The fuel pump uses fuel to cool itself. Driving on a near-empty tank in stop-start traffic is the fastest way to kill it. Refill at quarter-tank, especially during the dry season.

Engine oilThe colour is not how you judge it

Modern detergent oils turn black within 500 km. That's the oil doing its job — suspending soot. Mileage and time-since-change are the real markers, not the dipstick colour. Stick to your manual's schedule.

Pre-purchaseOne inspection saves five regrets

Before you put a deposit on a used car, send it to a workshop you don't share a phone book with. Pay the inspection fee. If the seller refuses, walk away — that's the inspection result you needed.

WipersReplace them before they squeak

If your wipers chatter, the rubber edge has hardened. A chattering blade leaves a film, and a film at night plus oncoming headlights equals temporary blindness. Wiper inserts cost RM35 a pair. No excuse.

Service rhythm

A simple, mileage-based service planner.

Use this as a guide. We'll adjust for your car's manufacturer schedule and your driving pattern.

  • Every 8,000 – 10,000 km — engine oil and filter, tyre rotation, visual inspection.
  • Every 20,000 km — cabin filter, air filter, brake inspection, fluid top-ups.
  • Every 40,000 km — spark plugs (most cars), brake fluid flush, transmission fluid check.
  • Every 60,000 km — coolant flush, gearbox fluid change, suspension audit.
  • Every 80,000 – 100,000 km — timing belt or chain check, drive belts, water pump.
  • Annually — aircon performance test, battery load test, full alignment.
